| Stanislaus County
– Students from three Stanislaus County schools will let their feet
do the walking in support of Walk to School Day. In an effort to promote
pedestrian safety and the benefits of walking in the community, the Stanislaus
County Safe Communities Coalition is sponsoring these walks. The coalition
works to address motor vehicle injury issues for Stanislaus County.
“Walking School Buses” will be moving throughout Modesto
and Denair on Tuesday, May 4 for Tuolumne Elementary School (Modesto),
Wednesday, May 5 at Denair Elementary School, and Friday, May 7 at Shackelford
Elementary School (Modesto). Departure times range between 7:30 –
7:45 a.m. . Students and parents will join teachers, elected officials
and community leaders as they walk to school. They will also be joined
by TraumaRoo, the safety Kangaroo, Chipper, the mascot of the California
Highway Patrol and PC the remote car.

Speed display machines, provided by the local police department and CHP,
will be used to inform motorists of their speed compared to the actual
speed limit.
Students and parents will be able to rate their walking route with a
"Walkability Checklist" that surveys motorist behavior, ease
of following safety rules, street crossings, route width and condition
of walkways as well as a general rating of how pleasant the walk was.
Parents joining the event can increase their child’s safety by pointing
out hazards and reminding children of safety skills for crossing streets
and walking through neighborhoods.
Walk to School Day in Stanislaus County
An estimated 5,700 pedestrians are killed each year, and one out of seven
(814) of those are children. With school in session, more children are
walking to and from neighborhood schools, often during the busiest traffic
times of the day when motorists are rushing to work or heading home after
a tiring day at work.
The walking event will help to promote the use of “walking school
buses,” which allow multiple students to walk as a group. The walk
will help to identify safe routes to school and to identify routes that
have dangers like lack of crosswalks & sidewalks, bad neighborhoods,
speeding drivers and dangerous drop off zones. Another goal is to raise
driver awareness and alertness through increased enforcement of traffic
codes.
Support for the events has been provided by Memorial Hospital, Stanislaus
County Public Works, Save Mart Supermarkets, Modesto Police Department,
California Highway Patrol, Turlock Police Department, and the Center for
Human Services.
The Stanislaus County Health Services Agency (HSA) is an outpatient medical
system with 7 medical offices located throughout Stanislaus County. The
HSA operates the Public Health Department, an Urgent Care Center and multiple
programs serving over 500,000 patients and clients each year in Stanislaus
County. The HSA has extensive community health information available at
its web site www.hsahealth.org
