An estimated 5,700 pedestrians are killed each year, and one out of seven
(814) of those are children. With school in session, more children are
walking to and from neighborhood schools, often during the busiest traffic
times of the day when motorists are rushing to work or heading home after
a tiring day at work.
The walking event will help to promote the benefits of physical activity
and the use of “walking school buses,” which allow multiple
students to walk as a group. The walk will help to identify safe routes
to school and to identify routes that have dangers like lack of crosswalks
& sidewalks, bad neighborhoods, speeding drivers and dangerous drop
off zones. Another goal is to raise driver awareness and alertness through
increased enforcement of traffic codes.
* The speed trailers at Modesto sights will be on the same streets that
are leading into the school.
